New leaders
Margaret Spellings took office in March as the new President of the University of North Carolina System and Dr. James “Jimmie” C. Williamson became the eighth President of the NC Community College System in July.

New capital
Also in March, North Carolina voters approved $2 billion in Connect NC bonds nearly 2-to-1. More than 2/3 of the bonds will go to build capacity at North Carolina’s public universities and community colleges.

Great universities
The Higher Education Works Foundation has embarked on a series called “What Makes a Great University” that looks at the features, the spirit and the people that make North Carolina’s public universities great – and what it will take to make them greater.

Great teachers
Instructors across North Carolina’s public universities show a deep commitment to teaching our children – for which they should be appropriately rewarded. But until this year, faculty at our universities had received just one raise from the General Assembly in seven years.
