CHAPEL HILL (May 8, 2016) – It can never be fully measured in hours or dollars, but the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill recognized Paul Fulton Jr. today for all he’s done for the University as dean, fundraiser, overseer and advocate.
“For outstanding accomplishments in the field of business, and in recognition of his generous service to the state of North Carolina and to the University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is pleased to confer on Paul Fulton the degree of Doctor of Laws,” Joseph Ferrell, the Secretary of the Faculty, declared to 30,000 who attended commencement exercises at Kenan Stadium.
Ferrell recounted Fulton’s business successes as president of Sara Lee Corp. and chair of Bassett Furniture Industries. He explained how Fulton, a 1957 graduate, served as dean of Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School from 1993-97.
He detailed how Fulton doubled fundraising for the business school and later co-chaired the Carolina First Campaign that raised $2.3 billion for the University. He listed his service on the University’s Board of Trustees and the Board of Governors that oversees the UNC System.
The nomination also detailed Fulton’s advocacy as Co-Chair of Higher Education Works, where he has spent several years traversing the state to build a movement in support of public higher education in North Carolina.
The honorary degree was conferred on Fulton by Chancellor Carol L. Folt.
