GREENSBORO – Though he’s new to campus, Chancellor Frank Gilliam of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro knows UNCG lost a star health economist to the University of Virginia.
“If faculty salaries stagnate, you will have retention problems,” Gilliam says in the accompanying video. “Our faculty, the best ones, are as good as anybody anywhere – and they have options. And if the idea is to educate our children with the best, then you have to keep the best.
“If we’re having productive faculty on the research side who are great teachers, why would the state want them to leave? That’s who you want in the classroom,” Gilliam says.
“No organization can be successful in the long run if it can’t retain its top talent.”

I am faculty in the UNC system with international recognition and I am actively searching for a better paying position. I would rather stay in my present position but not if I continue to be grossly underpaid.

How could we be so fortunate to have such an articulate Chancellor ?
Staff says
Let’s not forget about the staff as well. They have to make a decent living as well and are grossly underpaid and overworked, sometimes doing more than 2 people jobs at a time. Faculty and staff alike need significant raises especially staff because most are barely living above poverty.
