We have received an overwhelming number of responses to Paul Fulton’s Piece published on November 21, 2023 and thought it valuable to highlight this response from Michael Tiemann, which depicts the sentiment in most of the responses we’ve received.
Dear Mr. Fulton,
Thank you for saying so clearly what must be said. It is tragic that we must be reminded of the fact that self-harm is never really limited to the individual actor, but redounds to the family and the community. The self-harm caused by the politicization of the UNC system has cost us great teachers, great students, and likely a great chancellor. It will also cost us dearly in terms of both the economic future of the State and our overall quality of life. Do we really want to live in a state where petty jealousies and political score-keeping trump teamwork, good faith, and mutual benefit?

Read “Dark Money” by Jane Mayer. Well written well documented and scary as hell. Pay particular attention to Chapter 12.

Republicans are ruining this state and especially the university in Chapel Hill. Their pursuit of power-enabled by extreme gerrymandering-is beyond the pale. They even want to take over high school sports, which I find unfathomable, given the vast number of unmet needs in this state. I pray Kevin Guskiewicz will find the strength, the wherewithal, to remain as chancellor and use his quiet yet brilliant intellect to mitigate GOP extremism directed toward the UNC Higher Education System

Well said, Michael
