FAYETTEVILLE – Chancellor James Anderson wants more students like Mikayla Raines and more faculty members like Dr. Carole Weatherford.
Anderson likes to highlight exceptional students and faculty at Fayetteville State University. In the accompanying video, he discusses Raines, who spent three years taking college courses at an Early College High School on FSU’s campus – then graduated from college at age 18 after just one year as a formal FSU student.1
Raines took a heavy course load, averaging 23 credit hours a semester, yet still had time for volunteer work in the community and on campus.
“But look what it produced,” Anderson says. “It produced an 18-year-old graduate, which means that her family won’t have to pay tuition for three years. Isn’t that amazing?”
“We want to make sure that we have more students like Mikayla Raines, who think about upping the hours they take, think about graduating early, think about their career options,” Anderson says.
He also highlights Weatherford, an award-winning author of children’s books who makes time to read at local schools. Anderson says he once even came across one of Weatherford’s books on display in the New Orleans airport.
“I want more faculty that are creative and innovative – and you have to go find them sometimes,” he says. “You don’t just put out a job announcement and expect them to always apply. I find people.”
